Description
The FMP area is located west of Kimberley, BC and east of Mathew Creek FSR. The majority of the FMP area has been previously harvested in the early 1980s to salvage lodgepole pine killed by mountain pine beetle. The stands are charactered by varying densities of Douglas-fir, Western larch, Ponderosa pine, Lodgepole pine, and Trembling Aspen in the overstory with a mixed species of Lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, and Western larch in the understory. The upper elevations and receiving areas of the FMP area also have components of Western Red Cedar and spruce.
This area has been identified as a priority for Wildland Urban Interface wildfire fuels reduction as the predominant summer winds and storms originate to the west and south of the City of Kimberley. Strategies of this contract are to reduce the risk of catastrophic fires in the Wildland Urban Interface adjacent to the City of Kimberley.
The priority is to utilize as much fiber as possible for secondary processing including biomass and pulp products as well as minor forest products. There will be no burning of any fiber harvested from crown land and therefore no smoke that would be associated with the burning of slash piles that would impact Kimberley residents.
This contract will be competitively tendered through an “Invitation to Tender” process using BC Bid. It will also be awarded in conjunction with a Forestry License to Cut and the winning bidder will be subject to Table 6.1 Provincial Stumpage Tab Rates, so the province will recoup some of the costs of the project.
