Description
NOTICE TO VENDORS
SPOKEN AND VISUAL LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS
The Court Services Branch (CSB) established a pre-qualified list of vendors for the provision of interpreter services. A plaintiff, defendant, accused, or witness has a legal right under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom and in Canadian Case Law, to request an interpreter be present for their court case. Each year CSB schedules and pays interpreters for approximately 7000 court appearances requiring a spoken language or visual language court interpreter for the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and Provincial Court.
Court interpreting is a specialized skill that requires more than the ability to speak two languages. The professional knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a court interpreter are highly complex. Communication of courtroom proceedings may be more complex than that in other setting. A court interpreter must be skilled in both languages and have knowledge of legal terms, court proceedings, colloquialisms, idioms and slang to accurately interpret information between the two languages. Court interpreters must always maintain a professional demeanor by conforming to the etiquette and rules of the proceeding.
Interpreters wishing to be on the CSB Court Interpreter directory must complete an application and submit this to Court Services Branch for evaluation. Further application information is available at:

Court Interpreters - Visual Language Application Package - August 2022 (gov.bc.ca)
