CULTUS LAKE SMALLMOUTH BASS SCALE AGING

Date et heure de clôture 2024/09/03 15:00 HAE
Description
Since the suspected illegal introduction of smallmouth bass into Cultus Lake in 2017, the native fish community has been at high risk of negative impacts from this invasive species. Population risk is especially high for endangered fish species in Cultus Lake, the Cultus Lake sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and endemic pygmy sculpin (Cottus aleuticus, Cultus Population). In the spring of 2023, the Ministry of WLRS launched the first year of a multi-year smallmouth bass suppression plan which includes various monitoring approaches including population monitoring through spring tagging and acoustic telemetry, smallmouth bass suppression through nest destruction and male removal, and fishery monitoring through creel surveys.
The Contractor must ensure the integrity of samples by treating them very carefully and receiving them in person (rather than being shipped, which would risk damaging samples and compromising the ability to complete the analysis). The samples will be delivered by WLRS staff.
Part of the population monitoring includes taking scale samples from captured smallmouth bass and analyzing the age of the scales at a qualified lab. During the 2024 field sampling season, 582 smallmouth bass scale samples were taken. This contract is for the aging analysis of 582 smallmouth bass scales to help with population monitoring and effectiveness monitoring of the suppression methods being trialed.
