Description
Notice is hereby given by the Ministry of Citizens’ Services (the "Ministry") of its intent to proceed with a direct award to Sa’hetxw Consulting to jointly engage First Nations’ communities with the Connectivity Division toward the Ministry’s mandate “to lead work to deliver high-speed connectivity throughout the province until all regions are connected to the high-speed network.” Connecting all homes on First Nations’ reserves with high-speed internet is essential to provide access to services and economic opportunities and is a fundamental component of the Province’s plan to support reconciliation. It aligns with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and B.C.’s corresponding legislation, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
While most British Columbians live in urban centres where internet coverage is well established, many smaller, less densely populated First Nations communities do not have access to basic high-speed internet as defined by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. There are an estimated 37,000 homes on First Nations’ reserves throughout BC where more than 25% lack access to high-speed internet today. Access to reliable high-speed internet is more important than ever before. Internet access is part of our daily lives from health, education, and public safety to being foundational for economic growth and recovery.
Building the right connectivity solution for a community can be complex, requiring community leaders and administrators navigating service provider proposals, technologies, permitting, affordability options and funding programs.
