    Description
    Scope of Project:

Cone beam computed tomography (CT) scanners enable internal volumetric imaging of the extremities in weight bearing and non-weight bearing configurations. Three-dimensional imaging of bones with lower radiation doses than traditional CT is performed using a rotating cone beam X-ray. Configurable systems enable imaging of various joints of the upper and lower extremities.

    General Description:

The weight bearing CT scanner will be used to visualize the bony geometry in the joints of the upper and lower extremities, with the knee joint of particular interest. Images will also be segmented to produce 3D models of joint geometry for further analyses and to develop personalized computational models. For this, export to Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format for use with typical segmentation software (e.g., Materialise Mimics, 3D Slicer) is necessary. A key use of the equipment will be to produce images for tracking biplanar videoradiography data. Therefore, the resolution of a pixel size of at least 0.5 mm and a slice thickness of at most 0.625 mm is required (Welte et al., 2022, doi:10.3791/63535) to allow for natural standing during imaging and reduce radiation dose to the participants when scanning both lower limbs, the ability to perform bilateral scans of the lower extremities is required.

    Mandatory Requirements:

    1. Weightbearing CT Scanner:

    1.1 Must fit in a 3x3 m footprint.
1.2 Must be capable of producing scans with an in plane resolution of 0.5 mm or less and a slice thickness of 0.625 mm or less.
1.3 Must be able to scan the hands, wrists, and elbows.
1.4 Must be able perform weight bearing scans of the ankles, knees, and hip.
1.5 Must be capable of bilateral scans of the lower extremities.
1.6 Must provide a desktop computer capable of runing the system and software. All required peripherals (keyboard, mouse, etc) must also be included.

    2. Software:

2.1 Must enable visualization of images in all three planes.
2.2 Must be able to export images to DICOM format.

    3. Other Requirements:

3.1 Installation and training must be included.
3.2 Must include a minimum of one (1) year warranty on parts and labour.
